Jan 2, 2023Elizabeth Kendall excavated early parts of George Balanchine’s history in Russia. Dedicated to understanding the inner-workings of this brilliant choreographer, Kendall taught herself Russian and stalked clues like an international sleuth. Years in the filed, Kendall unearthed a fascinating ballet dancer who shared Balanchine’s early history in the dance studio and rehearsal room. Her nae was Lidia Ivanova, and according to Kendall, her impact on Balanchine was consequential.
Naturall, this book will draw many dance aficionados, but the subplot reads like a mystery novel. Bright, beautiful and immensely talented, Lidia loses her life while in a boat with two young men. The Russians have yet to solve this “cold” case and there are curious circumstances surrounding her demise.
An immensely readable book, you are memorably immersed in early 20th century Rusiian history, politics, and cultural eruptions.
