Commentary by Celia Ipiotis, Creator/Producer/Host of EYE ON DANCE
Lynn Taylor Corbett was one of those chameleon artists who successfully navigated a career between the concert stage and commercial sector composing for ballet and modern dance companies, theater and film. Her choreographic signature could just as easily appear on the stage of American Ballet Theater or on the screen in Footloose. Having studied both modern and ballet, Ms. Corbett performed with the Alvin Ailey Company and in Broadway musicals.
Corbett, an affable woman, spoke candidly on EYE ON DANCE in 1987 about gaining a dancers’ trust and negotiating a career in the theater, a predominantly male enterprise in the 1970’s and 80’s.
In this EOD clip, Corbett responds to Celia Ipiotis’ question about dancers’ responses to new and unconventional movement demands.
(This 1987 EYE ONDANCE episode features Lynn Taylor Corbett along with Cassandra Phifer, an original Dance Theater of Harlem ballet dancer, and Lisa Lockwood, a teacher and former American Ballet Theater and Feld Company member)
