The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater congreated the dance community to celebrate the life Judith Jamison at City Center on December 11.
When I heard the news of Jamison’s passing, my heart felt a jolt at the passing of a dance titan.
As a young girl in Dayton, Ohio, I saw Judith perform Cry on TV and was forever transformed. At the time, I was a bellet dancer but that image of a monumentally powerful female dancer fueled my desire to investigate this other form–this exhilerating modern dance form that freed the body.
It was my unforgettable fortune to meet this great lady of dance when our paths criss-crossed throughout my career in NYC. Her aura expanded whith each and every development in her career and life-long love affair with the Alvin AIley American Dance Theater.
Judith Jamison forever changed many lives and all will feel the loss of this Olympian artist.
