For so many, the names Manet and Degas illicit awe and a desire to sit inside their paintings. Now at the Met Museum a monumental exhibition examines the dear and tumultuous relationship between Edouard Manet and and Edgar Degas. Born only two years apart, Manet (1832–1883) and Degas (1834–1917) were frenemies, rivals, and, at times, antagonists who worked to define modern painting in France.
The more than 160 paintings ( get your comfortable shoes out) and works on paper look at the dialogue between these two artists in the context of family relationships, friendships, colleagues, and intellectual circles that influenced their artistic choices. Regardless of how many times you’ve gazed at the paintings of these two men, this exhibition brings the viewer into an intimate connection with the masters.
